Pain in the Palin

The reviews of this book…

Review #1: OMG.  Facts.  This is totally fact-based.  Facty McFacterstein.

It is amazing how many people have an opinion without facts! But this book actually labels facts, not opinions. Not a lot of emotion in this book, but a detailed explanation of facts.

Review #2: OMG Obama is destroying capitalism.

There is an INCREDIBLE wealth of knowledge in this book that covers all of Obama’s radical and socialist influences and contacts. It tells of his early associations and how many of them have even helped bring about his rise to power and helped in shaping his radical policies that threaten to bore from within our country to destroy capitalism (the basis for our economy) in our nation.

Review #3: Obama is a Marxist, Socialist, Fascist Nazi.

After reading, “The Manchurian President”, you may still wonder how America could have possibly elected BHO, but you won’t wonder why he acts like a marxist through his public policy. The truth is, he’s been around marxism and socialism his entire life, and his policy reflects this stunning truth.

Review #4: Couching hatred of President Obama in such a way so as to evoke sympathy for your fears; irrationally tying brave soldiers to a book review so as to disingenuously wave the American Flag while proclaiming that your President is “a communist etc.”

I beg any and all people who can prove this book wrong to step forward and do it. It is scary and people have said horrible things about this President being a communist etc. Please prove this new book wrong. I fear that it can’t be done. I fear that we have ourselves deeper in than is imagined. I fear all sorts of things for this beautiful country that people seem not to appreciate anymore. GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS! THEY ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD OF OURS. GOD BLESS YOU SOLDIERS.
Thank you to all our men and women wearing the uniform of the greatest country on earth. It used to be anyway. I beg you again prove this book wrong. We are waiting and praying.

Review #s 5 & 6: Probably written by the same person.  Also, OMG Obama is ruining the country.

This book is the investigative journalism that SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE in 2008.
This book uncovers the corruption of the current administration, and its ties to America hating groups that have been working on taking our government and economic system DOWN for decades.
Please read this excellent book.
It is well researched, well footnoted and contains the TRUTH about this administration, which is America’s enemy within.

It is a must read for any thinking individual!
This has possibly more pertinent, revealing information
in one place about our present government, than any book
available at this time.
Do yourself, and your country, justice by reading
exactly what is happening to our country and why.
Very revealing book that should be read by everyone.

Review #7: I’m going to say I’m going to be fair, but really I already have a bias.

Ladies and gentleman, I apologize for the lengthly book review… full disclosure… I did not obtain the above book through Amazon.com, but as a gift from a military friend. Furthermore, I am not a fan of this current administration. But I fully intend to be fair and open-minded. I know you will as well.

…I’m sure you can figure out where it goes from there.

Review #8: I’m crafty.  I wrote a poem.

I have for well over a year labelled Obama as a Manchurian Candidate and I am so delighted that a professional has taken up the cause. The book presents essential background info for understanding what is happening to this country in the hands of the Manchurian, Obama. I love how the far left reviewers copy the cirticism correctly directed at the left in slamming this book. Can’t they at least be a bit original. As stated in my poem “The Wizard O’bam” “A wiz a wiz a wiz he’s not; The phoney wizard O’bam.

Review #9: The intellectual heavyweight.

And some may wonder why people call him a Marxist… a socialist… or a Communist?

You’ll not wonder after reading this book!

Now, the second way to keep our democracy healthy is to maintain a basic level of civility in our public debate.  (Applause.)  These arguments we’re having over government and health care and war and taxes — these are serious arguments.  They should arouse people’s passions, and it’s important for everybody to join in the debate, with all the vigor that the maintenance of a free people requires.

But we can’t expect to solve our problems if all we do is tear each other down.  (Applause.)  You can disagree with a certain policy without demonizing the person who espouses it.  You can question somebody’s views and their judgment without questioning their motives or their patriotism.  (Applause.)    Throwing around phrases like “socialists” and “Soviet-style takeover” and “fascist” and “right-wing nut” — (laughter) — that may grab headlines, but it also has the effect of comparing our government, our political opponents, to authoritarian, even murderous regimes.

Now, we’ve seen this kind of politics in the past.  It’s been practiced by both fringes of the ideological spectrum, by the left and the right, since our nation’s birth.  But it’s starting to creep into the center of our discourse.  And the problem with it is not the hurt feelings or the bruised egos of the public officials who are criticized.  Remember, they signed up for it.  Michelle always reminds me of that.  (Laughter.)  The problem is that this kind of vilification and over-the-top rhetoric closes the door to the possibility of compromise.  It undermines democratic deliberation.  It prevents learning –- since, after all, why should we listen to a “fascist,” or a “socialist,” or a “right-wing nut,” or a left-wing nut”?  (Laughter.)

It makes it nearly impossible for people who have legitimate but bridgeable differences to sit down at the same table and hash things out.  It robs us of a rational and serious debate, the one we need to have about the very real and very big challenges facing this nation.  It coarsens our culture, and at its worst, it can send signals to the most extreme elements of our society that perhaps violence is a justifiable response.

Dear Megan,
It’s obvious you must’ve had your head stuck in a hole in the ground for a while.  I mean, some say that Obama’s doing too much, while at the same time others say he’s not doing anything.  You say he’s not doing anything. Then, as soon as he gets health reform passed and moves on to financial reform, you complain that he’s doing too much.
Why don’t we go over some things he’s done so far…
- Began withdrawing troops from Iraq
- Ended media blackout on war casualties
- Closed offshore tax safe havens
- Promoted insourcing (as opposed to the previous policy of outsourcing) American jobs for tax benefits
- Returned money offered to him, like every president, for White House furnishings and upgrades (examples: did not “re-do” Oval Office or pick his own rug like prior presidents; did not pick out official new china like prior presidents)
- Send two troop brigades to Afghanistan (and if you guys complain about him “withering,” he had time; troop decisions do not go into effect the next day)
- Instituted enforcement of equal pay for women
- Beat some pirates
- Improved conditions at Walter Reed
- Instituted no-torture policy to bring US in line with Geneva convention
- Started nuclear nonproliferation talks; actually going to do what this guy said he would do.
- Expanded health care to cover 4 million more children.
- Provided funds to families of fallen soldiers, so that they could be on hand when the body arrives at Dover AFB.
- Limited salaries of senior White House aides
- Ended previous stop/loss policy that kept soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan for longer than their enlistment date.
- Phased out the F-22 war plane (which was OUTDATED, guys) and other outdated systems, which weren’t even used or needed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
- Fully fund the Violence Against Women Act.
- Allowed Medicare to negotiate for cheaper drug prices.
- Reduce subsidies to private student lenders.
- Expand Pell grants to low-income students.
- Establish credit card bill of rights.
- Require insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions.
- Signed UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
- Increase funding for local emergency planning (Hurricane Katrina, anyone?) and expand programs to rebuild New Orleans.
- Initiate training program to combat cyber-crime.
- Released presidential records.
- Removed vegetation that fueled wild fires (including controlled burns).
- Expanded access to places to hunt and fish.
- Expanded AmeriCorps.
- Bolstered the military’s ability to speak different languages.
- Created new criminal penalties for mortgage fraud.
- Promoted community colleges.
- Revised restrictions on stem cell research.
According to PolitiFact, Obama has kept 110 promises, has 255 projects “in the works,” compromised on 34 projects, stalled on 83 projects, and broke 19 promises.  Overall, I’d say he’s doing quite a bit.  But, hey, what do I know?
I’m just sayin’

This is sickening.

This is sickening.

As long as we’re on a roll with this “strong America” thing… let’s talk about “gotcha politics”

A few days ago, Sarah Palin wrote a Facebook post.  In that post, she said…

Asked this week about his faltering efforts to advance the Middle East peace process, President Obama did something remarkable. In front of some 47 foreign leaders and hundreds of reporters from all over the world, President Obama said that “whether we like it or not, we remain a dominant military superpower.”

Whether we like it or not? Most Americans do like it. America’s military may be one of the greatest forces for good the world has ever seen, liberating countless millions from tyranny, slavery, and oppression over the last 234 years. As a dominant superpower, the United States has won wars hot and cold; our military has advanced the cause of freedom in Iraq and Afghanistan and kept authoritarian powers like Russia and China in check.

Granted, Palin parsed President Obama’s words.  The full quote is here:

But what we can make sure of is, is that we are constantly present, constantly engaged, and setting out very clearly to both sides our belief that not only is it in the interests of each party to resolve these conflicts but it’s also in the interest of the United States. It is a vital national security interest of the United States to reduce these conflicts because whether we like it or not, we remain a dominant military superpower, and when conflicts break out, one way or another we get pulled into them. And that ends up costing us significantly in terms of both blood and treasure.

Obama’s point?  Whether we like it or not, we’ll get pulled into conflicts which cost America money.  NOT whether we like it or not, we’re a strong military power.

There’s a great difference between the two sentiments.  Missing that difference either means that a) Ms. Palin is parsing together words for dramatic Facebook content; or b) Ms. Palin is unable to comprehend the difference.

I’m going to give her the benefit of the doubt on this one and assume that she understands the difference.

So, what’s so troubling about what Governor Palin is doing?  Besides painting Obama as an America-hater, Ms. Palin is doing that which she hates most: playing “gotcha” politics.

Remember Sarah Palin and the beginning of the age of “gotcha journalism”?  When McCain said that sometimes, soundbites are taken out of context and used for, erm, “gotcha” purposes?  Ah, yes, “gotcha soundbites.”  I’ll post the interview below, for your convenience…

Katie Couric: Over the weekend, Gov. Palin, you said the U.S. should absolutely launch cross-border attacks from Afghanistan into Pakistan to, quote, “stop the terrorists from coming any further in.” Now, that’s almost the exact position that Barack Obama has taken and that you, Sen. McCain, have criticized as something you do not say out loud. So, Gov. Palin, are you two on the same page on this?

Sarah Palin: We had a great discussion with President Zardari as we talked about what it is that America can and should be doing together to make sure that the terrorists do not cross borders and do not ultimately put themselves in a position of attacking America again or her allies. And we will do what we have to do to secure the United States of America and her allies.

Couric: Is that something you shouldn’t say out loud, Sen. McCain?

John McCain: Of course not. But, look, I understand this day and age of “gotcha” journalism. Is that a pizza place? In a conversation with someone who you didn’t hear … the question very well, you don’t know the context of the conversation, grab a phrase. Gov. Palin and I agree that you don’t announce that you’re going to attack another country …

Couric: Are you sorry you said it?

McCain: … and the fact …

Couric: Governor?

McCain: Wait a minute. Before you say, “is she sorry she said it,” this was a “gotcha” sound bite that, look …

Couric: It wasn’t a “gotcha.” She was talking to a voter.

McCain: No, she was in a conversation with a group of people and talking back and forth. And … I’ll let Gov. Palin speak for herself.

Palin: Well, it … in fact, you’re absolutely right on. In the context, this was a voter, a constituent, hollering out a question from across an area asking, “What are you gonna do about Pakistan? You better have an answer to Pakistan.” I said we’re gonna do what we have to do to protect the United States of America.

Couric: But you were pretty specific about what you wanted to do, cross-border …

Palin: Well, as Sen. McCain is suggesting here, also, never would our administration get out there and show our cards to terrorists, in this case, to enemies and let them know what the game plan was, not when that could ultimately adversely affect a plan to keep America secure.

Couric: What did you learn from that experience?

Palin: That this is all about “gotcha” journalism. A lot of it is. But that’s okay, too.

There was also that one incident about the Bush Doctrine.

And this small incident regarding opinions by the Supreme Court…  and how she only knows about the one that potential single-issue pro-life voters haaaaaate?

And that incident regarding whether or not she could name any of the founding fathers.

It appears that Sarah Palin is now playing a “gotcha” game of her own.  First, she played it with Rahm Emanuel.  Now, with President Obama.

But God forbid anyone play it with her.  Then she’ll play the victim of unfair “gotcha politics.”

We should probably resign ourselves to the fact that every utterance Sarah Palin makes is widely going to be treated as news until she declares she isn’t running for president. And quite possibly beyond. So all we can do is try to fact-check what she says and hope others do the same.
The latest: In a new Facebook missive, Palin butchered Obama’s quotes at the nuke summit in a strikingly dishonest (even for her) way, tearing them out of context to suggest he’s uncomfortable wielding American power and is hostile towards American exceptionalism:

Mr. President, is a strong America a problem?

Asked this week about his faltering efforts to advance the Middle East peace process, President Obama did something remarkable. In front of some 47 foreign leaders and hundreds of reporters from all over the world, President Obama said that “whether we like it or not, we remain a dominant military superpower.”

Whether we like it or not? Most Americans do like it.

Here’s what the President actually said:

But what we can make sure of is, is that we are constantly present, constantly engaged, and setting out very clearly to both sides our belief that not only is it in the interests of each party to resolve these conflicts but it’s also in the interest of the United States. It is a vital national security interest of the United States to reduce these conflicts because whether we like it or not, we remain a dominant military superpower, and when conflicts break out, one way or another we get pulled into them. And that ends up costing us significantly in terms of both blood and treasure.

As you can see, Palin and her team of ghostwriters plucked Obama’s remark out of context to quote him saying “whether we like it or not,” we are a superpower. In reality, he was saying that “whether we like it or not,” we get pulled into international conflicts that cost us American lives — so it’s in our security interests to resolve them.
Since everything Palin says in her tightly-controlled media environment will be treated as news for the next two years and beyond, all we can hope for is that those lavishing attention on what she says inject a bit of context and reality into the discussion.
Update: The Associated Press has now done a whole story on Palin’s criticism without pointing out that it’s bogus.
